The Republic of Madagascar shortly known as Madagascar, gained its independence on 26teh June, 1960. The total land under cultivation is nearly 5 percent and Madagascar cultivates a good quality of coffee, sugarcane, vanilla, cocoa, beans, rice and livestock products. The labor force of the country was 7.3 million till 2000 and the major industries in the country are meat processing, sugar textiles, soap industries, automobile assembly plant, petroleum, paper industry and tourism industries. Madagascar also has a number of natural resources like graphite, coal, salt, chromite, mica, semiprecious stones, fish and hydropower. Major exports of the country are coffee, shellfish, vanilla, cotton cloth, petroleum products and sugar where as the country imports consumer goods, petroleum, capital goods and food.
