Palmyra Atoll

Palmyra Atoll is a unified atoll that is administered by the government of the United States of America. It is 12 square kilometers in length and has its location in the North Pacific Ocean. Geographically speaking, the Palmyra Atoll is one of the islands of the northern line. The Hawaiian Islands lie to the south of the Palmyra Atoll. The west lagoon forms the 14.5 kilometers of the coastline of Palmyra Atoll. The Atoll has two shallow lagoons, some fifty reef-rocks, sand bars and islets that are mostly covered with the vegetation, comprising of coconut trees and the tall Pisonia trees and an extensive reef.

All the islets of Palmyra Atoll are connected with each other, except the Sand Island present in the west and the Barren Island present to the east. The Cooper Island located to the north of the Atoll is the largest island, followed closely by the south based Kaula Island. The northern curve of islets on the Palmyra Atoll is formed by the Cooper Island, Strawn Island, Aviation Island, Whippoorwill Island, and Quail Island, followed towards the east by the Papala Island, Pelican Island and the Eastern Island and towards the south by the Holie Island, Tananger Island, Engineer Island, Kaula Island, Marine Island and the Home Island.
