Officially known as the Republic of Vanuatu, Vanuatu is an island nation situated in the Southern Pacific Ocean. The Vanuatu archipelago is situated at a distance of 500 km to the north-east of New Caledonia, 1750 km to the east of Northern Australia and a distance of 500 km to the south of Solomon Islands. The first inhabitants of Vanuatu were the Melanesian people. Europeans settled in the region in the later part of the 18th century. Vanuatu was officially claimed by both France and United Kingdom in 1906. Followed by a popular public support for independence in the 1970s, Vanuatu was formed in 1980.

Basically, the politics of Vanuatu comprise of a parliamentary democracy with the president of the nation as its head. The president is elected by a two third majority for a 5 year period in an electoral college. It consists of members of both the regional council presidents and the parliament members. The president is impeached in case of incapacity or gross misconduct. The official head of the government is the Prime Minister, who is elected by a majority vote based on quorum. The council of ministers is appointed by the Prime minister. This council of ministers and the prime minister constitute the executive government.
