Space Travel & Exploration

Space has always been a fascination for mankind and studies in astronomy predate any historical records. Mans fascination with space, stars, and the celestial bodies has been active since the early beginning.

Space travel and exploration is the examination of outer space by human flights or robots or even animals such as monkeys. Space exploration really took a flight during the cold war when the United States of American and Russia began a race towards space exploration. While Russia initially had achieved more successes than the USA in the space race, it was an American astronaut named Neil Armstrong who was the first man to land on the moon. It was USSRs Sputnik 1 which was the first craft to orbit the earth. Yuri Gagarin was the first man in space and Aleksei Leonov was the first man to walk in space in 1965. Since then space exploration has viewed exponential growth with NASA (National Aeronautic and Space Administration).

However there has been significant criticism put forward towards space programs, the major being usage of scarce and extremely valuable resources, the heavy investments that space programs attract. But NASA has come a long way fighting such accusations as no one has forgotten the tragic accident that took place aboard Apollo 1 where three American astronauts had died while being trapped inside the shuttle.
