Shopping Directories are websites that point to the best shopping resources on the web. Shopping is one of the most popular activities on the web and there are many great shopping sites out there. Some simply represent the online presence of retailers which are also well-established in the real world; others cater to internet customers only. Amazon is among the best known of these. It was one of the first online shopping portals to receive very heavy investment. Specialising originally in books, it has since branched out and expanded into many other product lines too. Most shopping directories will specialise in shopping resources related to one particular country as, although some online shops trade internationally, not all do and, in any case, the cost of international postage is still prohibitive, giving local online retailers a strong advantage.

Shopping directories natually group the resources they show by the product or general product type. Some directories may offer a price comparison facility that allows users to search for products they are interested in and have the results display the price of that product across all of the retailers who stock it. Of course, it’s impossible for a price comparison site to include all possible online retailers in its search results; most concentrate on only a dozen or so major ones for each price category.
